History and Background

Until very recently, the Portuguese limestone stonework industry was essentially made-up of highly skilled or talented stone-workers that could shape any form from a raw stone block. This is a traditional industry that dates back hundreds of years, whose detailed work can be found on numerous churches or historic building all over the country.

Since recently and due to large investment on new technology, some factories have started production large scale stonework products for larger projects in Russia or the Middle East for example. This growing demand has led to a small boom that a handful of companies benefited from. Today, Portugal is a relevant player on the supply of limestone stonework products in the world market.

Popular Limestones

The most popular limestone to be used on diverse decoration are Moleanos Fine, Moca Cream, Cabeca Veada, Rosal, among others. Colored limestone are also included in this mix to add color contrast and different designs.

Markets and Trends

There is a limited market worldwide for this sort of product. Countries like Russia, Middle Eastern countries, UK, Germany or France are perhaps the main markets.
